Open Letter to my Mama

What an amazing woman!

Thoughtful and cute, too!

Dear Mom –

I have friends who have lost their Mamas in the past weeks, months and years. As my heart is breaking for them, I’m thanking God that I still have you to call on a whim – as long as it’s after 9 in the morning, since I know and respect that you’re not a morning person 🙂 I realize that I need to tell you, while I have the chance, how much I appreciate you, and for apologies I should make to you.

I’m sorry for my arrogance during my teen and college years when I thought I knew everything. I wish I could stop there, but I’m guilty of arrogance, as I had my own child and thought I knew everything about raising her. Thanks for your patience with me as I figure things out and call on you for advice. Advice that I’m now willing to accept (most of the time).

As you know, I’ve struggled with finding my “thing.” I would ask myself, “What’s my Mom’s thing?” I thought back to all the times you flew hundreds or thousands of miles to take care of Nanny and Papa, making decisions that couldn’t possibly have been easy. You were a grownup, but they were still your Mama and Dad. I’ve observed as you dropped everything to help your sister as she recovered from brain surgery. You’ve flown across the country to be there for your sister-in-law when she needed help during illness. You’ve been the one who is there. There – wherever there is.

You’re unapologetic in your devotion to God and living a wholesome life. A life with integrity and values, even if you think no one is watching, or it’s not popular. It’s who you are to the core.

I pray I follow your example of living for others without expecting anything in return. I also hope I inherit your good genes. You look amazing!!!! Perhaps it was the Oleo during WWII 😉

I love you more than I can express in words and appreciate you always!

Honorary Mamas

Clearly given by an HM!

Clearly given by an HM!

You may not be a Mama to one, two or four kids. Instead you’re an Honorary Mama (HM). You may be the favorite aunt, the grown-up next door, the confirmed bachelorette, or the wife of a co-worker who comes over for parties. From one Mama to an HM, I want to say a huge thank you!

You can be cool, when I can’t. You play at the park, when I don’t have the energy. You craft with abandon, when all I see is the mess I’ll have to clean up. You offer sweets, when I think it’s too close to dinner. You give attention to that one child who hides behind the sibling who’s getting into trouble. You give praise to the child who feels inadequate to overachieving friends. You provide a safe place when the world seems unfair. You give advice to a child who is too embarrassed to talk to Mama.

Basically, as an HM you make a child feel special. And to me, that’s the best quality of a Mama!
